CEOs and founders, listen up! I'm here to tell you the cold, hard truth: you should never write your own copy. Let me repeat that: NEVER. WRITE. YOUR. OWN. COPY.

Why not, you ask? Well, let me tell you.

First of all, just because you're the boss doesn't mean you're a good writer. In fact, most of you probably suck at it. Sure, you might be great at running a business or coming up with innovative ideas, but when it comes to writing, there’s a lot you don’t know. Good design isn’t about making a brand look pretty, although that’s a nice benefit of it. Good design is about function and making a brand work on your target audience. Good copywriting isn’t about making your brand sound good either. It’s about communicating the messages that are important to your target audience. Then it sounds good.

And let’s face it. Most CEOs can’t structure sentences that flow well, free from cliches, and easy to understand. 

Even if you are a decent writer, you're too damn close to your own product or service to be objective. You're too emotionally invested in it to see it from the customer's perspective. You might think your product is the best thing since sliced bread, but your customers might think it's just stale bread. And if you write your own copy, you're only going to be promoting your own biased view of your product. 

Writing good copy takes time and effort. And as a CEO or founder, your time is better spent doing other things. You know, like actually running your business. Leave the writing to the professionals who know what they're doing and who studied for it.

You don’t go to the dentist to tell him or her what to do, or even worse, grab the tools from their hands and start fixing your own teeth in the mirror. When you write your own copy, you’re that person.
